China to send its first high-resolution Earth observation satellite into space

The first high-resolution Earth observation satellite of China, which is aimed at decreasing the occurrence of disasters, protecting resources and for national security purposes, will finally be launched into space this April.

The satellite will also be used for urban transportation management, to support geographic and oceanic surveys, improve the nation’s ability to obtain high-resolution observation data, and accelerate its development of satellite application technologies. The State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SATIND) of China completed the testing and examination of the satellite and its carrier rocket, Long March 2D, and has now entered the launch stage.

Before the end of 2015, China aims to launch at least six satellites to build a spatial, temporal and spectral high-resolution Earth observation system.
